This statement is part of the Robust Community Engagement Campaign that I will be running alongside my funding proposals, Action Research Creative Community Arts Programme.
“My current project is a true labour of love as I am producing an intensive Action Research scheme to inform the development strategy of a long-term community arts programme based at BN1 Arts during evenings, weekends and school holidays. I want to really maximise this amazing space to its full potential and open up the doors to a community who are in desperate need of its invaluable creative resources. This is a highly nuanced initiative which will target marginalised groups who have limited access to the arts - particularly black/global majority communities who are significantly underrepresented and have fewer opportunities. The project combines ongoing community outreach/consultation with a dynamic series of learning, training and performance opportunities. It will also include a Community Open Weekend featuring a wide range of creative activities and workshop sessions. BN1 Arts offers the perfect accessible welcoming platform to propel local talent and I’m eternally grateful for their ongoing support helping to make this into a reality.
I’m on a mission to work collaboratively with a range of strategic and community partners to develop a sustainable inclusive arts space reflecting the diversity of the community with a vibrant cultural programme for mixed ages, backgrounds and abilities. The project will also bring together aspiring and professional creatives to learn from and inspire each other, and it will offer them meaningful and paid opportunities.
The community consultation process for this initiative is already well underway and there have been some very powerful testimonies driving home the urgent need for this kind of activity. The feedback collated so far has informed the current programme of special ‘taster’ sessions in Dance/Choreography and Music Production/Recording. I am also establishing a series of fortnightly ‘Friday Night Showcase’ events to platform live Musicians, Singers and Spoken Word artists performing to intimate audiences.
There’s so much more to come, and if you would like to take part in the consultation to put forward your own ideas for the community programme I’m putting together I’d really love to hear from you”
